As the Fleet Training Officer for the City of
Richmond, B.C., I have utilized The "Checker"®
inspection check-list books for all of our
Public Works equipment. In one instance near the
end of February a Work Safe BC, Occupational
Safety Officer inspected a job site where our
boom truck was set up.
Our driver/operator handed the Officer his
certification papers and also his vehicle
pre-inspection check -list for the day. The
Officer was completely surprised when he looked
at the document that included the pre-inspection
of both the vehicle and the articulating crane
itself.
He indicated that he had never seen such a
complete report and asked if he could have a
couple of copies to show his fellow Officers.
When our operator informed him that we have been
using the check-list for a couple years or more
the Officer actually congratulated us for our
pro-active approach towards safety.
Over the years I have tried not to waste time
re-inventing the wheel and when I came across
the Transportation Fleet Management Series of
"Check-List" I ordered report books for nearly
all of our Fleet equipment. For pennies a day
per book our operators are pleased with us
taking a pro-active approach towards their
safety.
The driver/inspector area on the Check-List for
repairs required makes it easy for our operators
to simply hand over a copy to our Equipment
Services Shop. They then hand in the other copy
for my records. I fully recommend the use of
the Check-List to everyone in our business and
also private companies.
I send my thanks to the nice people at Oakville,
Ontario who have courteously and quickly
supplied us with all of our Check-List Books for
the last two years and I look forward to a long
term relationship with your company.

The Checker program is a pro-active tool to use when
starting the work day. It is a simple yet effective
method to help your employees focus on Health & Safety and
at the same time enhances diligence for your respective
company. It has been a great addition to our H & S
system.

Prior to using “The Checker” ® I would often find that
the pre use inspections on our lift trucks were not
completed. The supervisors being as busy as they are
needed a fast and easy way to ensure the pre use
inspections was complete. Since using “The Checker”® the
two part check off sheet has made it a fool proof
system. Our lift truck operators complete the pre-use
inspection and leave the second copy on the
supervisors desk at the start
of each shift; no inspection not complete. They know
right away with just a glance. We have been using the
system for over a year now and during my safety audits I
always find the pre use inspections completed.
The lift truck operators like it, the Supervisors like
it, and it has made my job much easier,
I love it.

Many years ago I heard an expression that
I believe to be true and I try to put it into
practice with my people as much as possible. It
says, “if you make it easy for your employees to
do the right thing – they usually will”.
“The Checker” does just that! The pouch
containing “The Checker” attached to the side of
each vehicle gives my operators a close reach
tool to perform shift by shift inspections that
help ensure the safety of both machine and
operator. They find it so easy to use.
It is equally easy for my Supervisors to confirm
compliance and this ‘due diligence’ closes the
compliance loop.
In my estimation that is the ‘right thing’
to do and in my organization “The Checker” makes
it fast, easy and convenient.
